We just finished up actually completing the room as well. I love how it turned out, one of these days I'll get it together enough to take some pictures of it.<br />

This is one of my favorite topics, so thought I'd start my own version. Introducing "Baller vs. Broke"; because we're not all ballers. Today's find - kitchen islands.<br />

Maybe it's because springtime is approaching but I'm super into bright colors right now. I feel like my house could use a dose of color in a few areas. Here are a few pieces I'm obsessing over.</div>

I put up a few Valentine's Day decorations today. I don't have a mantle, which I think is the best spot for holiday decor, so I put mine on the kitchen counter. Maybe this will remind Zach that Valentine's Day is approaching and he can plan accordingly. He is a Valentine's Day scrooge. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a quick break down. I cut out the glitter hearts from a glitter craft foam sheet I got at Hobby Lobby, for under a dollar. Then I hot glued the hearts to the ribbon. This was quite the process because my cat kept laying on my ribbon while I worked. The candles are just plain white candles, I wrapped heart shaped ribbon around them that I bought from the Target dollar section. The XOXO print I made in Microsoft Word, and the framed heart I simply cut out of scrapbook paper. The other accessories are things I had around the house.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8c1FPxbqjK_1te8TlUrrWrlnYCnOa6YZ5jWu0znjEa3Y3FSN-r3LUQdmNx-ypyM1bcvkPqJBFhqgX7cNx5fh5VjFKcz6yVRFW6lyvuqnDs1zUfHncgciOsnn2k5XzjrVKbyVOoLvF-qM/s1600/DSC00292.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8c1FPxbqjK_1te8TlUrrWrlnYCnOa6YZ5jWu0znjEa3Y3FSN-r3LUQdmNx-ypyM1bcvkPqJBFhqgX7cNx5fh5VjFKcz6yVRFW6lyvuqnDs1zUfHncgciOsnn2k5XzjrVKbyVOoLvF-qM/s1600/DSC00292.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOksAGr1k01tvK45uxU7M3xQ8eiP964_sq8qb5012DTkzNuyOpV0CNQm7deoiaFjLBuOp6dr2ko2NPrJiC1n_9Rxcc-qHY24mbqeW0ex5pr7LSIbn1Zm08X6giscN6lbd8-W9DfpHUKSI/s1600/DSC00298.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOksAGr1k01tvK45uxU7M3xQ8eiP964_sq8qb5012DTkzNuyOpV0CNQm7deoiaFjLBuOp6dr2ko2NPrJiC1n_9Rxcc-qHY24mbqeW0ex5pr7LSIbn1Zm08X6giscN6lbd8-W9DfpHUKSI/s1600/DSC00298.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
My original plan was to use this print that I designed, but then my printer decided to stop working. Wah-waaah. So I thought I would put it here for you instead! Just click to enlarge, save to your computer, print, and frame to add to your own Valentine's Day vignette.<br />

However I'm always on the lookout for a new way to display art and photos. One thing I haven't tried yet is a picture rail. <br />
<br />
I remember the first use of a picture rail that caught my eye was on <a href="http://makingitlovely.com/2012/06/04/scientific-botanical-prints/" target="_blank">Making It Lovely</a>, Nicole has picture rails throughout her home. She recently hung a beautiful botanical print from a picture rail in her living room.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHqtAPCzMy2kaQA4j08R8XuqDOygSMxbgI2zCgM6_5V6BK_Bg1THQHAtTmiDsWuzgpNg86xsouKf8d0yHac4z1OaC1Z5jVE7g3Y9rcnD6vrGdC0oxcnvsxMP0vdDNWxhToHWO12dM-nlQ/s1600/picrailhook-makingitlovely.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHqtAPCzMy2kaQA4j08R8XuqDOygSMxbgI2zCgM6_5V6BK_Bg1THQHAtTmiDsWuzgpNg86xsouKf8d0yHac4z1OaC1Z5jVE7g3Y9rcnD6vrGdC0oxcnvsxMP0vdDNWxhToHWO12dM-nlQ/s1600/picrailhook-makingitlovely.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Two picture rails and hooks are used <a href="http://www.littlepinkmonster.com/2010/06/01/painted-frames/" target="_blank">here</a> with matching teal frames. I love this idea. There are several online companies where you can purchase <a href="http://www.ashanging.com/en/click-rail-system" target="_blank">picture rail hooks</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_U4iRt_BRWkkY-w9EIvqHmsKDMHphFgUwU1w86ePLTpSdiTISgPZfJDTPYxX77E7FXbA4A0bxEuoYMVDqMyMsMwEMymUwFnYRrP4HVkTgMNjk8c64jol8C5kkG6lSgGZXTHAT4uVqctA/s1600/IMG_4562.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_U4iRt_BRWkkY-w9EIvqHmsKDMHphFgUwU1w86ePLTpSdiTISgPZfJDTPYxX77E7FXbA4A0bxEuoYMVDqMyMsMwEMymUwFnYRrP4HVkTgMNjk8c64jol8C5kkG6lSgGZXTHAT4uVqctA/s640/IMG_4562.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Picture rails also make it easy to change out artwork.</div>

I'm addicted to buying trays, and I use them all over my house. They are great for corralling those random items that you need easy access to. Plus you can find really cute ones and they're almost always affordable.<br />
<br />
Here's some examples of how I use them in my own home.<br />
<br />
In my office to keep everyday office supplies in one space instead of spread all over our desk.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpZS_fo_Z7ySAGZOxqBaTCnU8RgcA0-3c301Yh9nrHssr3JLsBHVtPsKzhg2vNEb1rAEwQ-tualDr3e4ems-mk7MkL9G0FcaTvVcUGGCoUG5OgJvZ19QPx1mQjCDszEtPJR4JCXUnPG2g/s1600/DSC00274.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpZS_fo_Z7ySAGZOxqBaTCnU8RgcA0-3c301Yh9nrHssr3JLsBHVtPsKzhg2vNEb1rAEwQ-tualDr3e4ems-mk7MkL9G0FcaTvVcUGGCoUG5OgJvZ19QPx1mQjCDszEtPJR4JCXUnPG2g/s1600/DSC00274.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
In my bedroom I actually use a cute dinner plate in place of an actual tray for lotions and perfume, don't judge my cheap perfumes. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFLLyK0MPUl2MCZcuxcuPRnOr0wlpF89o8FsX7sH4i_69eK6zalVIR1yOd3a9GUT_yOHfjkxDh5AIIO9J6pp3kaOwNiVZ9dm2DdSsl_uaAFUFfNlFiQAPvGCIOHRNZ1CbyEbNl8AYQ0m8/s1600/DSC00282.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFLLyK0MPUl2MCZcuxcuPRnOr0wlpF89o8FsX7sH4i_69eK6zalVIR1yOd3a9GUT_yOHfjkxDh5AIIO9J6pp3kaOwNiVZ9dm2DdSsl_uaAFUFfNlFiQAPvGCIOHRNZ1CbyEbNl8AYQ0m8/s1600/DSC00282.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A tray also can be nice as a strictly decorative item. I have one in my living room behind the sofa holding a few room accessories just to break up the sofa-table a little. </div>

Personally, mine is always to stop biting my nails like a weirdo, and 2013 is gonna be my year I tell you! A couple years ago I did a presentation on home organization for my women's church group. I put together a little PowerPoint document for it; and I realized I've never shared it on my blog, so I thought now would be the perfect time! <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I used a combination of inspirational images from various sources, as well as photos from my own home. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I know everyone wants to reach out to help those parents and family members that lost their little angels in any way that we can. That's why I was so happy to hear about <a href="http://www.smallfryblog.com/2012/12/20/operation-sandy-hook/" target="_blank">Operation Sandy Hook</a>. <a href="http://www.smallfryblog.com/" target="_blank">Small Fry</a> and <a href="http://brickyardbuffalo.com/deals/" target="_blank">Brickyard Buffalo</a> have teamed up along with other artists and graphic designers, and are offering a collection of downloadable prints, all at $5 each. Profits will go to the <a href="https://newtown.uwwesternct.org/" target="_blank">Sandy Hook School Support Fund</a> through United way.</span><br />

When I'm sending out holiday cards or party invitations I don't like spending lot of money. And if you pay for a design, envelopes, postage, printing costs - it all adds up quickly! <br />
<br />
So to save a little scratch, I like to design my own. And you really don't need any fancy skills or fancy programs to do it. I like to use the free online program <a href="http://picmonkey.com/">picmonkey.com</a>. I am not a paid advertiser for Picmonkey, I just really like the program! It is fairly new, so everything is free right now; but eventually they will start charging for some of the premium options.<br />
<br />
Anyway, it's super easy to use. Here is how I made my Christmas card this year!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyMum7LvrXcwCcEQSrL92-kjXBJ5bh3IEjHpaldlpi611ZazdjPxOzCyNeuYQSGlC4qBWnyZmY_rjbtb-q5H8wFLonRCnYZIQ40UPU6vQLjyK_O0zTUbKrMeIVykIjaVleb7C61RQM7uo/s1600/HowTO.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyMum7LvrXcwCcEQSrL92-kjXBJ5bh3IEjHpaldlpi611ZazdjPxOzCyNeuYQSGlC4qBWnyZmY_rjbtb-q5H8wFLonRCnYZIQ40UPU6vQLjyK_O0zTUbKrMeIVykIjaVleb7C61RQM7uo/s1600/HowTO.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<b>Step One:</b> Click on "Create a Collage"<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOvF8wJ24tDtQsQhtyJI0T12yO9_P8IJN1CyyK0_5zC8BrxBNY5HyGZUaxH08UhZ6q7c_lR9ihGsoeNJhROZVey1SjHHiY5jwQuyzeAq6KrAkTGUIdzfdVQ1HJmgrRbXvzbdhXdIlsWBc/s1600/Slide1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOvF8wJ24tDtQsQhtyJI0T12yO9_P8IJN1CyyK0_5zC8BrxBNY5HyGZUaxH08UhZ6q7c_lR9ihGsoeNJhROZVey1SjHHiY5jwQuyzeAq6KrAkTGUIdzfdVQ1HJmgrRbXvzbdhXdIlsWBc/s1600/Slide1.PNG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Two:</b> Change the pixel size. This is so when you go to have your photo cards printed, they will be the correct size and will not have to be cropped. To make 5x7 prints, your pixel size needs to be 2100x1500.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIeGqPEA5q_UFrvuov5vyPlakEwnSnE4sKX5m9fC-p4RX9zX09zF8PNYsHt-kBBTJIaTy9d67B1cUGPRUnu-eoYJBJq040M1rRvG6FZ56o1ydAyj35TEIHFhLUl6UL9sAW4w93-TXl4UQ/s1600/Slide2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIeGqPEA5q_UFrvuov5vyPlakEwnSnE4sKX5m9fC-p4RX9zX09zF8PNYsHt-kBBTJIaTy9d67B1cUGPRUnu-eoYJBJq040M1rRvG6FZ56o1ydAyj35TEIHFhLUl6UL9sAW4w93-TXl4UQ/s1600/Slide2.PNG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Three:</b> Now that your sizing is correct, add your photos. I chose several photos so that I could play around with the design and see what I liked best. You don't have to use every photo that you upload. Also note here that I uploaded a blue wood grain design background. I got this by simply googling "Digital Scrapbook Freebies Christmas" and found several free digital scrapbook kits with all kinds of cute background designs. The blue wood grain design I used is from <a href="http://www.designhousedigital.com/erica-coombs/merry-little-christmas-mini-kit" target="_blank">The Merry Little Christmas Mini Kit</a> from <a href="http://www.designhousedigital.com/erica-coombs/merry-little-christmas-mini-kit" target="_blank">Design House Digital</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8DlttthbgQHakYZLUfVSbN2T2VYR38D86uZsiycyIZIsdP1B_FjTTPFbxNO_yNbChmCVklf4wKqZR_Gel-dbTHMeqMSPH107TrbDvsMtjfRi9IjSWnW08V7VdHF2eVLd2E5XDXn4tP_k/s1600/Slide3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8DlttthbgQHakYZLUfVSbN2T2VYR38D86uZsiycyIZIsdP1B_FjTTPFbxNO_yNbChmCVklf4wKqZR_Gel-dbTHMeqMSPH107TrbDvsMtjfRi9IjSWnW08V7VdHF2eVLd2E5XDXn4tP_k/s1600/Slide3.PNG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhimEpikg8aaUoJKaZRqL0dm4nPOncPz4orSYkYK6iqmZVCvI6ZuLuqESMNlx_Z2ZU5MtDGqCTt5cn4R41LGrgkkytLu8ILYn1sSK8LvnfIcuRy1O7JKQoFpwOsk1ubVbgcl05eBGz31Qw/s1600/DHD-EricaCoombs-MerryLittleChristmas-MiniKit-Preview.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhimEpikg8aaUoJKaZRqL0dm4nPOncPz4orSYkYK6iqmZVCvI6ZuLuqESMNlx_Z2ZU5MtDGqCTt5cn4R41LGrgkkytLu8ILYn1sSK8LvnfIcuRy1O7JKQoFpwOsk1ubVbgcl05eBGz31Qw/s640/DHD-EricaCoombs-MerryLittleChristmas-MiniKit-Preview.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step Four: Once you have your pictures and background loaded, you need to save your file. I call this the "base design". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicO0GxDIoNCs-0ZUIvqLklFF0OIkpQ4EeNtvfo0bZXqrL7Qs1Iu7v_0AcV2CaxB0wt5kNn80eKkucFCXCKLSzryAFhTzsD9_jaDWhz3-sYjOKbRGMMkWGwrZDpgUvmkgQWUXES3Y8_fu8/s1600/Slide4.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicO0GxDIoNCs-0ZUIvqLklFF0OIkpQ4EeNtvfo0bZXqrL7Qs1Iu7v_0AcV2CaxB0wt5kNn80eKkucFCXCKLSzryAFhTzsD9_jaDWhz3-sYjOKbRGMMkWGwrZDpgUvmkgQWUXES3Y8_fu8/s1600/Slide4.PNG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Five:</b> You save a "base design" because for some reason Picmonkey doesn't let you add any text or symbols to collages, so you have to save the file as a blank design, and then reopen it in Picmonkey as a single photo. You do this back at the main Picmonkey screen:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje3BZijx0EJWhWTPIX8zM7muWttiaWaY797NtHPMVl4I3TWgc3ZbUdjZZglxATO6yMZqqMZ5wv_pFjMzpsk4LK9Xgsay7UOAqFiwUx1N9AT93UkA1JbAgf8dUXisUM5PlOuPdK5esJ7n0/s1600/Slide5.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje3BZijx0EJWhWTPIX8zM7muWttiaWaY797NtHPMVl4I3TWgc3ZbUdjZZglxATO6yMZqqMZ5wv_pFjMzpsk4LK9Xgsay7UOAqFiwUx1N9AT93UkA1JbAgf8dUXisUM5PlOuPdK5esJ7n0/s1600/Slide5.PNG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Six:</b> Now that your "base design" is open in Picmonkey, you can see it looks the same as the collage screen; but there are different options on the left. To add text to your design choose the "P" button. Now have fun adding text and symbols to complete your design! When you're all finished, save the file to your computer and simply have them printed anywhere that prints photos. I use Costco.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibM4GAL6ryb2bi2LOtwf2ZiaAAz2SUylP6ihyx0Z-LCnNmMk6fKKbOEvjf7Ij95SsAgyKnU82-La38SfxkBipZkpNX7613OyeO2T9hx8WLEoNOL3mFPc5NGdkkz7cvUgImNz4E5JYyVdU/s1600/Slide6.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibM4GAL6ryb2bi2LOtwf2ZiaAAz2SUylP6ihyx0Z-LCnNmMk6fKKbOEvjf7Ij95SsAgyKnU82-La38SfxkBipZkpNX7613OyeO2T9hx8WLEoNOL3mFPc5NGdkkz7cvUgImNz4E5JYyVdU/s1600/Slide6.PNG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Picmonkey has all sorts of different fonts and symbols/clipart to choose from and the possibilities are endless. Here is what my Christmas card looked like when I was finished. Even if I wasn't trying to save money I'd probably still design my cards this way because I think it is super fun. I used the same method to make my daughter's birthday card this year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've have zero good excuses for why I haven't been blogging. Are blogs still cool? Seems like it's all about Instagram and Facebook these days, and I follow a lot of funny people on Twitter but haven't had the guts to post on it myself yet. I know you were all dying to know my thoughts on social media so you're welcome!<br />
<br />
Let us move on to more important matters, and that is Kohl's. Good ol' Kohl's; always good for a laugh. I usually find nothing there but the occasional surprisingly cute shoes. Well I was pleasantly surprised again the other day when I found a really cute shower curtain for my daughter's bathroom! It was from the brand <a href="http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/ourbrands/sonoma.jsp?searchTerm=sonoma#slide=2&sub=0" target="_blank">Sonoma Life + Style</a>, and when I got online I found several other cute home decor items from the same line.<br />

So instead they have blank walls. But the thing is, what's the worst that could happen? You hang something and it looks bad? Then take it down and try something else. Believe me, it's very easy to fill nail holes.<br />
<br />
To illustrate my point, I'm going share with you some really ugly wall arrangements (and crappy photos) by yours truly. One wall in my living room has gone through many changes.<br />
<br />
This is what I hung up when we first moved in, yikes. Mostly I used items I already had, and then I spray painted a couple of thrift store finds. It's not good.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/3862391904/" title="New Wall 018 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img alt="New Wall 018" height="480" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3488/3862391904_5d2d01f781_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Here's what I did next, I decided I needed some bigger pieces. Better I guess, but still scary.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/4075767968/" title="11_2_09 007 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img alt="11_2_09 007" height="480" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2743/4075767968_c565754f92_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
After we bought our sectional, I added to the arrangement. It stayed like this for awhile, but I wasn't truly satisfied with it.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/4712101570/" title="new sofa 005 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img alt="new sofa 005" height="640" src="http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4049/4712101570_e910977734_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><br />
<br />
And this is how it looks now. Much better from the original crap fest. But I'm sure I'll change it again eventually.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/7747234930/" title="DSC00173 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC00173" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8298/7747234930_91df5d3d57_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/7747236326/" title="DSC00178 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC00178" height="480" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7256/7747236326_ba2679268b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/7744395320/" title="7744347708_19268e9367_k by erigutt, on Flickr"><img alt="7744347708_19268e9367_k" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8429/7744395320_a29b83c05a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
This just shows how it won't kill you to experiment a little. Yeah like me, you might go through some fugly arrangements; but eventually you'll find something that works.Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01537566898470016048noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-644234065563578872.post-65375911428735475932012-08-08T20:21:00.000-07:002013-01-31T13:32:30.561-07:00Making Three Adjoining Rooms CohesiveMy client Katie has a floor plan with three adjoining rooms - her front room, her family/TV room, and her kitchen. We wanted each room to have it's own feel, however they needed to also be cohesive. We did this by using one main color scheme: yellow, blue, green, and gray. However, each room highlights the colors differently.<br />
<br />
The <b>front room </b>is yellow, gray, and blue. (The quatrefoil pattern seen here represents a plastic room divider that Katie is custom ordering to be placed between her front room and family room.)<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/7744106798/" title="Katie L. - Front Room by erigutt, on Flickr"><img alt="Katie L. - Front Room" height="734" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8441/7744106798_6cd874bfbc_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><br />
<br />
The <b>family room</b> uses mainly blues and greens.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/7744103048/" title="Katie L. - Family Room by erigutt, on Flickr"><img alt="Katie L. - Family Room" height="621" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7138/7744103048_6b38e94849_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
And the <b>kitchen </b>uses all the colors; but sparingly so as to avoid the three spaces getting too busy. The kitchen also includes a small desk/office area.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/7744104138/" title="Katie L. - Kitchen and Desk Area by erigutt, on Flickr"><img alt="Katie L. - Kitchen and Desk Area" height="402" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8423/7744104138_235b1a5b68_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />

Out of respect for my client who paid for the room boards, I won't be posting a full source list, but feel free to e-mail me if you have a question about a specific item. Thanks!Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01537566898470016048noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-644234065563578872.post-35913741328448590932012-06-19T17:24:00.000-07:002012-06-19T17:51:47.569-07:00How To Hide Your Computer CordsTruth bomb: this post will not contain pretty pictures. My office is still very much in progress, but today I organized my computer cords that have been driving me cray cray. My husband hates when I say "cray cray". <br />
<br />
Here are my ugly cords, bleh.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj95DMpigF3dSdMnuAF7RGAKoj59eW6Rmzkdnq-LbyqsuwUrQPGfsMQCYi4SquoF6p97mFZbJeTlrVUPgrODEZALM3k3Xpk4z2JGkHroD5pC3HYzllk5fu3GgIseTm-XwwW1oaOr9do8ws/s1600/DSC00131.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj95DMpigF3dSdMnuAF7RGAKoj59eW6Rmzkdnq-LbyqsuwUrQPGfsMQCYi4SquoF6p97mFZbJeTlrVUPgrODEZALM3k3Xpk4z2JGkHroD5pC3HYzllk5fu3GgIseTm-XwwW1oaOr9do8ws/s640/DSC00131.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I bought some of these "Mug Hooks" at Wal-Mart for about 2 bucks. They are peel and stick.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoRmJ99RkMOfaUMaL8F2G5bunKoNFrTcq4mVP7FVky-qBrSThDStZkQRtjjIynunRpAvEPFr2W_P3iIfPbz_i1X0m18hGuZTU8QfFftUgB5XK651fJL2MSV0WBrHyTulsIkPLLuFG9vB0/s1600/DSC00132.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoRmJ99RkMOfaUMaL8F2G5bunKoNFrTcq4mVP7FVky-qBrSThDStZkQRtjjIynunRpAvEPFr2W_P3iIfPbz_i1X0m18hGuZTU8QfFftUgB5XK651fJL2MSV0WBrHyTulsIkPLLuFG9vB0/s640/DSC00132.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I stuck my hooks along the bottom of my desk like so. I knew the power pack to my lap top was going to be too heavy for the peel and stick hooks, so I attached two screw-in hooks to hang it on.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDkuw4qVMoLVHd71fLH2FTZo7ZfuzjLuZulGIQBsoW7hXa3tABFNJODj7g8Y5jbUafgW51kUA0SgMrIkSSG_Ht8Ry_S0SUlR2ug8oClRwqQqC4io4YukbpJ9osRe_fDWcA5Ydy3Ql2Qes/s1600/DSC00137.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDkuw4qVMoLVHd71fLH2FTZo7ZfuzjLuZulGIQBsoW7hXa3tABFNJODj7g8Y5jbUafgW51kUA0SgMrIkSSG_Ht8Ry_S0SUlR2ug8oClRwqQqC4io4YukbpJ9osRe_fDWcA5Ydy3Ql2Qes/s640/DSC00137.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's how it looked once I strung the cords through, and hung up the power pack.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="line-height: 0px; padding-bottom: 2px;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/250231323015265069/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="600" src="http://media-cache-ec2.pinterest.com/upload/250231323015265069_vNfnDlwp_c.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
But you can't put a gallery display on every single wall in your house or you're gonna look like a crazy person. Here are some other ideas to fill those empty walls.
Framed wallpaper.

I immediately thought of the almost <a href="http://www.westelm.com/products/stripe-duvet-cover-sham-b704/?pkey=cduvet-covers" target="_blank">exact same duvet cover that West Elm</a> carries; and of course Target's Queen size version is less than half the price! This is why Target is the best.<br />

While shopping for a room board, I came across this great deal on pillow covers! It's the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_home-garden/178-9245645-2108144?node=1055398&_encoding=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=Nena+Von">Nena Von line</a>, available through Amazon! I've seen this seller on Etsy as well. All of the pillow covers pictured are $25 to $35 dollars each, a great price.
<br />
<br />
Be sure to fill your covers with down pillow inserts, they look the best. <a href="http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_09607112000P?sid=IDx20070921x00003a&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=09607112000">Sears</a> has great prices on down pillow inserts, and if you're local, <a href="http://www.mesasales.net/">Mesa Sales</a> has them even cheaper.Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01537566898470016048noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-644234065563578872.post-79193134913984418222012-05-09T16:17:00.000-07:002012-05-09T16:17:20.037-07:00Recent Room BoardsI am alive! I had so much fun putting this room together for my baby girl.<br />

Two things on the shelf are from my own childhood. I framed a page from one of my favorite children's books, The Fat Cat. And the alphabet box used to be in my nursery as a baby.<br />

She already had the headboard and bedding so I knew I needed to work in navy, and this artwork did just the trick! It had navy plus all the fun orange, yellow, turquoise, and green that I used for the rest of the accessories.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/6130770382/" title="Nicole - Room Board by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6194/6130770382_d537e8a2de_z.jpg" width="640" height="437" alt="Nicole - Room Board"></a>Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01537566898470016048noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-644234065563578872.post-77909456870201216462011-09-01T13:42:00.006-07:002013-01-31T21:24:26.101-07:00AZ Magazine - Melissa's HouseAZ Magazine recently featured our work at Melissa's house in an article they did about budget decorating. Once I get my copy in the mail, I will scan and post the full size article so the text is readable. I thought the pictures turned out great, and Melissa looks so cute!

<br />
I've been pretty MIA lately - very busy being fat and pregnant and making my husband rub my feet. But don't lose hope on me yet, I've got a few posts planned for the next week or so. I'm trying to be a good little blogger again!Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01537566898470016048noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-644234065563578872.post-1068081085986927812011-08-11T09:18:00.003-07:002013-01-31T21:24:43.385-07:00A little progressSlowly but surely making some progress in the nursery. So far we have:
<br />
<br />
- Emptied the room and closet, no easy task since this was formerly our office.
<br />
- Touched up paint
<br />
- Painted closet and installed closet system
<br />
- Bought a dresser ($80 bucks on Craigslist!)
<br />
- Placed rug in room
<br />
- Ordered and framed first piece of artwork
<br />
<br />
Here's how it looks now compliments of a poor quality phone camera. Even though we've done a lot of work, it still looks pretty sad and empy. But I'm loving the rug!!
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/6028903315/" title="nursery progress1 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img alt="nursery progress1" height="375" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6064/6028903315_e922791895.jpg" width="500" /></a>
<br />
<br />
My next steps are:
<br />
<br />
- Order the crib
<br />
- Decide on hardware for dresser drawers
<br />
- Decide on a glider
<br />
- Continue hunt for curtains or fabric for DIY curtains
<br />
<br />
I also picked up <a href="http://www.art.com/products/p15481421-sa-i3773749/jodi-fuchs-collective.htm?sorig=cat&sorigid=0&dimvals=0&ui=968a746e6f8c4d8bbeb31b930863f11e&searchstring=jodi+fuchs">this print</a> that I hope to work into the room as well. It is "Collective" by Jodi Fuchs.

I'm 22 weeks along and ever since we found out we're having a baby girl the wheels have been turning for how to decorate the nursery. Here are my initial ideas, but I have a feeling I'm going to be changing my mind on a few things. I just want it cheery, but soothing, neat, and modern. Lots of colors and not TOO much pink.<br />

He is 15 and needed something a little more grown up. He's also a huge fan of University of Utah sports - so he requested the room be themed around that; including a red wall! I'm usually not a fan of red walls, but I think for Alex's room it worked. It's a fun addition to this teenage boy room.<br /><br />Here's the original room board I put together. We veered a little from this plan, which usually happens, but it gave us a good blueprint.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5621667393/" title="Alex - Room Board by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5223/5621667393_308111a049.jpg" width="500" height="337" alt="Alex - Room Board"></a><br /><br />We did this whole room for under $300. My Aunt Chris did most the work - removing wallpaper, painting the room, and painting the furniture. Once she had everything prepped, we spent a full Saturday finishing the room. The morning was spent at IKEA picking up the last essentials, and the rest of the day we organized and rearranged, hung artwork, and begrudgingly put together our IKEA purchases.<br /><br />BEFORE<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5622251556/" title="alex BEFORE by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5304/5622251556_35dfc4a84e.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="alex BEFORE"></a><br /><br />AFTER<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5621662239/" title="alex after 9 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5067/5621662239_3c64e4540e.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="alex after 9"></a><br /><br />BEFORE - Desk<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5622255296/" title="alex BEFORE 4 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5185/5622255296_17e18c6a60.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="alex BEFORE 4"></a><br /><br />AFTER - Desk<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5621656265/" title="Alex after 2 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5303/5621656265_592dfb1eec.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Alex after 2"></a><br />Before Alex's desk held his TV for videogames, and there wasn't a lot of surface left for anything else. Chris painted the desk drawers, and we cleared it off so he can use it for homework now.<br /><br />We purchased a $12 Ikea LACK table to provide a new spot for his TV. We also put a bin underneath to hold all his videogame systems.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5621660363/" title="Alex after6 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5062/5621660363_202b31d7c5.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="Alex after6"></a><br /><br />BEFORE - Closet<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5621664393/" title="Alex BEFORE 2 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5262/5621664393_8568483426.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="Alex BEFORE 2"></a><br /><br />AFTER - Closet<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5621658415/" title="Alex after4 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5310/5621658415_37e485b86f.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="Alex after4"></a><br />Alex purged a lot of his clothes he no longer wears, and we brought in a shoe organizer, a drawer system, and some bins. Much better!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5622247552/" title="Alex after5 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5149/5622247552_090c7049fb.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Alex after5"></a><br />We added a shelf above his bed for all his trophies.<br /><br />We placed a chair here as a place for him to sit to play his videogames. For the University of Utah artwall, we found all the images online and printed them on a color printer. The frames are old ones that we painted black.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5621657121/" title="Alex after 3 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5182/5621657121_46ff291471.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="Alex after 3"></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/erigutt/5621655497/" title="Alex after1 by erigutt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5024/5621655497_6d4465f831.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="Alex after1"></a><br /><br />So there you go, a teenage boy room on an extreme budget!Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01537566898470016048noreply@blogger.com13
